ALBERTA FOREIGN GRADUATE ENTREPRENEUR STREAM
Alberta's Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
Alberta’s Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream (FGES) is a vital component of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), which is part of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) tailored by Alberta. The FGES is designed to facilitate permanent residency for international graduates holding foreign post-secondary qualifications, aiming to establish and manage a new business in Alberta.
Candidates are evaluated through a points-based Expression of Interest system, with top-ranked individuals in the pool receiving an invitation to present a comprehensive Business Application. Successful applicants will then receive a nomination from Alberta, qualifying them to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Establishing a Business in Alberta
For individuals aiming to qualify under the Alberta Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream, initiating or acquiring a business in Alberta is essential. Ownership requirements differ based on location: a minimum of 34% for businesses in urban regions, or 51% for those situated in rural areas, excluding Calgary and Edmonton. The program prioritizes businesses in sectors such as technology, aerospace, financial services, energy, agriculture, tourism, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals.
Steps to Application
This stream utilizes an Expression of Interest (EOI) system. Eligible candidates are invited to submit their profile through the AINP online platform. Upon submission, profiles are scored and ranked according to the FGES Points Grid. Candidates with the highest scores will be prompted by the AINP to complete a Business Application.
Within 90 days of invitation, candidates must forward a fully detailed Business Application, including a business plan evaluated by designated agencies. A $3,500 CAD fee accompanies all AINP Business Applications.
Upon approval, a Business Performance Agreement is to be signed by the applicant, detailing the conditions tied to receiving a nomination for permanent residency. Successful candidates are then expected to adhere to the agreed terms, which include operating the business in Alberta for a minimum of 12 months and providing a comprehensive report prior to the nomination.
Candidates who secure a provincial nomination have a six-month window to lodge a federal application for Canadian permanent residency. This stage requires a paper-based application process, typically concluded within 18 months.
Alberta FGES Points Ranking System
The Alberta Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream assigns candidates’ scores based on various criteria, including language proficiency, educational background, business management or ownership experience, business plan quality, investment history, and job creation potential. The process ensures that only the most promising candidates are invited to apply.
