Canada Permanent Resident (PR)
Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) in Canada
The Canadian government issues a Permanent Residence Card (PR Card) to those who have been granted permanent resident status. This card is a key document, primarily used as proof of status, especially during international travels.
Key Features of the PR Card:
- Proof of Status: The PR Card verifies that the holder is a permanent resident of Canada, crucial when re-entering Canada using commercial transport such as airplanes, boats, trains, or buses.
- Travel Document: While the PR Card itself is not a travel document, it is required by permanent residents returning to Canada by commercial means, used alongside a passport from their country of origin.
- Validity and Renewal: PR Cards are typically valid for five years, although some may be issued for only one year. It’s important to renew the card before it expires to maintain its validity for travel.
- Residency Obligation: Permanent residents must meet specific residency obligations to maintain their status; the PR Card helps in verifying these obligations, particularly for those who travel outside Canada.
- Not a Citizenship Document: Possessing a PR Card does not equate to Canadian citizenship; it merely signifies the holder’s right to live and work in Canada permanently.
Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)
For permanent residents outside Canada without a valid PR Card, a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) can facilitate travel back to Canada. Once in Canada, they can apply for a PR card renewal or replacement.
Did You Know?
Your permanent resident status does not expire with your PR card. Permanent resident status is only lost through an official process, not by failing to meet residency obligations. Your status remains until a formal decision is made.
Permanent Resident Card Application Process
New permanent residents automatically receive a PR Card after they immigrate to Canada and provide a Canadian mailing address. Existing residents need to apply for a PR Card if:
- They haven’t received their PR Card within 180 days of immigrating to Canada;
- Their PR Card is expiring within nine months;
- Their PR Card is lost, stolen, or destroyed;
- They’ve legally changed their name and need to update their PR Card.
Applications must be submitted in hard copy to one of IRCC’s designated Case Processing Centres.
PR Card Validity Period
Most PR Cards are valid for five years; however, some are issued for only one year. It’s wise to apply for renewal at least six months before your card’s expiration to ensure continuous validity as a travel document.
Urgent Processing
Urgent processing of PR Card applications is available under specific circumstances, such as imminent travel due to a job opportunity, serious illness, the death of a family member, or work-related reasons. While urgent processing can be requested, it is not guaranteed, emphasizing the importance of keeping your PR Card up to date.
